Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel Visits Lithuania

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel paid a working visit to Lithuania last Tuesday August 26, 2008. She met Lithuania’s President Valdas Adamkus, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas and other officials. Important issues on the discussion agenda were the Georgia – Russia crisis and future energy security for Lithuania.
Lithuania has been at the forefront in expressing support for Georgia. Lithuania’s foreign minister, Petras Vaitiekűnas, was the first minister of any country to fly to Georgia immediately after the Russian invasion. This was soon followed by President Adamkus, together with the Presidents of Estonia, Poland and Ukraine and the Prime Minister

of Latvia, flying to Georgia to offer support. Chancellor Merkel and President Adamkus reiterated their firm support of Georgia’s territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders. On energy security, Chancellor Merkel assured Lithuania that the European Union will not leave Lithuania energetically isolated.
