The 2010 Quality of Life Index, published this month by the “International Living” magazine, lists Lithuania as 22nd in the world among 194 countries surveyed. Lithuania was rated above the United Kingdom (25) and just below Portugal (21). Of the countries in Eastern Europe, Lithuania rated second only to Hungary (20). The number 1 position in the index was taken by France and Australia was listed as number 2.
The “International Living” magazine has now been producing the Quality of Life Index for 30 years. The index takes into consideration various factors such as the cost of living, leisure and culture, economy, environment, freedom, health, infrastructure, risk and safety and climate. It is a wonderful achievement for Lithuania to be rated so high in the quality of life area, especially in these times of economic hardship due to the world financial crisis. One feels that Lithuania’s Millennium Year celebrations, just finished, and Vilnius being a European Capital of Culture for 2009 contributed significantly to the high rating.
