After the fall of the previous Lithuanian coalition government and the resignation of the Prime Minister, Algirdas
Brazauskas, President Valdas Adamkus called on Gediminas Kirkilas, who was Defense Minister in the previous government,
to form a new ministry. The new minority coalition government of 14 ministers was approved by parliament and was duly
sworn in on July 18, 2006.

being he will continue as the chairman of the Social Democratic party. He had been premier for the last 5 years. Among the
well wishers wishing him well in his retirement was American President Bush, congratulating him on Lithuania’s achievements
under his rule, particularly membership of NATO and the EU, and declaring the United States’ appreciation of the
partnership with Lithuania in supporting democracy.
