Lithuania and six other countries joining NATO were welcomed by President Bush in Washington at a ceremony in front of the White House on Monday, March 29, 2004. The Prime Minister of Lithuania, Algirdas Brazauskas, is third from the left.
This ceremony followed the formal lodgement of NATO accession treaty documents in Washington. A few hours earlier NATO fighter planes had landed at the Zokniai airbase in Lithuania to guard the airspace above Lithuania and the other Baltic States, Latvia and Estonia.
