NATO’s Military Committee, its highest Military Authority, met 19-21 September 2014 in Vilnius, Lithuania, at the level of Chiefs of Defence. The purpose of the conference was to implement the decisions reached at the recent NATO Summit in Wales, 4-5 September 2014. It was hosted by the Lithuanian Chief of Defence, Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas and was chaired by General Knud Bartels of Denmark, the current Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. The NATO Chiefs of Defence were meeting in Vilnius for the second time. Their first meeting in Vilnius was in September 2004, soon after Lithuania had joined NATO.
On September 20 the NATO Military Committee Conference was addressed by Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who emphasised the necessity to speedily transform the decisions reached at the NATO Summit in Wales into concrete defence plans.
