Lithuania Honours Viktoras Šliteris, Former Honorary Consul-General in Sydney

Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has honoured Viktoras Šliteris OAM, who has served as Lithuania’s Honorary Consul-General in Sydney for many years until his retirement just recently. Last Thursday, October 23 2008, in Vilnius the Foreign Minister Petras Vaitiekūnas presented Viktoras Šliteris with the “Lithuania’s Millennium Star” (“Lietuvos tūkstantmečio žvaigždė”) award in recognition of his many years of dedicated service.
Viktoras was appointed Lithuania’s Honorary Consul in Sydney in 1994, became Honorary Consul-General in 1997 and continued in this position until August 2008. In presenting the award, the Foreign Minister stated that Viktoras’ work in Australia “represents an important page in Lithuania’s diplomacy” and that his work “was notable for a genuine desire to help everyone seeking his help”.
Prior to this award, Viktoras had already been honoured by Australia with the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2002 and by Lithuania with Orders of Grand Duke Gediminas, Cross of the Knight categories 3 and 5, and the Sport Order, category 2.
