International Success for Lithuanian Students

At the recent 48th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, 19-31 July 2007, Lithuanian student Kęstutis Česnavičius won a Gold medal and came 31st among 522 participants from 93 countries.
All in all Lithuanians students did well in the Olympiad, with a further two Bronze medals (by Aistis Atminas and Vytautas Grūstys) and with an Honourable Mention for Gytis Žilinskas. Thus Lithuania in total won 1 Gold, 2 Bronze and 1 Honourable Mention. Following his success at the Olympiad, Kęstutis Česnavičius was voted as the July winner of "Lithuanian Identity (LT Tapatybė)" award, which is bestowed on Lithuanians who best present Lithuania to the world. Australian Lithuanians will be interested to note that in this Olympiad Australia also did well with 1 Silver, 4 Bronze and 1 Honourable Mention, with Matthew Menzies winning the Silver and taking 50th place.

In the student sports area, Lithuanian students have also been quite successful at the world student games, the 24th Universiade Bangkok 2007, just recently held in Bangkok, Thailand, 8-18 August 2007. Gold medals were won by the Lithuanian basketball team (with M.Prekevičius as captain) and by Viktorija Žemaitytė in the heptathlon. Bronze medals were won by sprinter Audra Dagelytė, and judo wrestlers Karolis Bauža and Egidijus Žilinskas.
