Lithuania’s intrepid sailors on the yacht “Ambersail” are sailing to Sydney to challenge Australians in the prestigious Sydney – Hobart yacht race, which traditionally departs Sydney for Hobart on Boxing Day, December 26. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia for this year’s 2012 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has received 82 entries, with four from overseas –Japan, New Zealand (2 entries) and “Ambersail” from Lithuania.
Even though this is the first time that Lithuania will be represented in the Sydney Hobart race, “Ambersail” is no stranger to Sydney. The last time that “Ambersail” sailed into in Sydney was on New Year’s Eve 2008, as part of an odyssey circumnavigating the world to celebrate Lithuania’s Millennium Year. “Ambersail” and Sydney Lithuanians then became first in the world to usher in Lithuania’s Millennium Year 2009.
“Ambersail” has competed in many international regattas, such as the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland, RORC Caribbean 600, Transatlantic, Rolex Fastnet and Rolex Middle Sea Races. Currently it is sailing across the Pacific to New Zealand and is expected to reach Sydney before Christmas.
