"Žuvėdra" Dancesport Ensemble Wins Gold in Latin American World Dance Championship
The dancesport ensemble "Žuvėdra" from the University of Klaipėda won first place second year running in the World Latin American group dance championship in Essen, Germany, last Saturday, November 22, 2003. Second and third place were taken by ensembles from Aachen and Bremerhafen in Germany. Competing in the world championship were 22 dance groups from 13 countries.
The Lithuanians demonstrated their virtuosity by performing the tempestuous "Brazil" program, which enthralled the viewers. They were awarded first place by six out of the seven judges. Winning the world championship comes only three weeks after "Žuvėdra" also won first place in the European Latin American championship held in the Czech Republic.
"Žuvėdra" has been ably coached by the outstanding wife and husband team, professors Skaistė and Romaldas Idzelevičius, from the Performing Arts Faculty of Klaipėda University. Under their tutelage "Žuvėdra" has become a brilliant dance group, famous in Lithuania and beyond, and has now won the world championship three times.
