International Success for Lithuanian Composers

At the 51st International Rostrum of Composers for contemporary music in Paris (June 2004) two Lithuanian composers achieved international recognition. Onutė Narbutaitė took second place (out of 29 entrants) for her composition "Melody" (second movement of Symphony No. 2). In the under 30 years category, Marius Baranauskas took fourth place (out of 20 entrants) for his symphonic opus "Kalbėjimas" ("Speaking"), which had also recently won third place in the Toru Takemitsu composers competition in Tokyo.
In fact, Baltic composers generally were very successful at the International Rostrum this year.First place was taken by the Estonian composer Helena Tulve with her symphonic work "Sula" ("Melting").
In the under 30 category, first place was taken by Santa Ratniece (Latvia), second place by Abigail Richardson (Canada) and third place by Tatjana Kozlova (Estonia).
The International Rostrum of Composers has been has been held in Paris annually since 1954, with participation of international public broadcasters involved in broadcasting contemporary music. It is supported by UNESCO and "Radio France". Lithuania's participation is through Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) as a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
