Lithuanian Artists at the Forefront of the International Art Scene

The Lithuanian artist Vilmantas Marcinkevičius has again demonstrated the high international standard of Lithuanian art by winning earlier this month the Saatchi Showdown Fourth Competition. His winning work “XXI Century Madonna”, painted in 2005, was voted as the best among more than 32,000 works entered worldwide. His prize was Ł1000 and having the honour of his work being exhibited at the prestigious Charles Saatchi gallery in London. The runner up was Wenqin Chen of China. Marcinkevičius’ win follows last year’s win of the most important European art prize, the Vincent Van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art 2008, by another Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevičius.
