President Dalia Grybauskaitė last Wednesday, 13 July 2016, met the Lithuanian World Community (LWC) Council (Pasaulio Lieuvių Bendruomenės (PLB) Valdybą) at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius. This was ahead of the meeting of the presidents of the various Lithuanian communities in the world on July 14-17, 2016, in Ukmergė. Australia was represented by the Vice-president of the Federal Executive of the Australian Lithuanian Community, Eglė Garrick. She heads the LWC Council Finances & Fund Raising Commission. During her meeting with LWC President Grybauskaitė emphasised that Lithuanian communities around the world have a strong role not only in maintaining a connection to Lithuania, but also in helping solve distressing social problems. She called on all Lithuanians to take part in the campaign “For a safe Lithuania”, to help deal with the problems of violence, bullying, suicides and drug dependencies.
The President also discussed ways of strengthening and safeguarding Lithuanian heritage and how the active participation of the Lithuanians in the world can help present Lithuania’s position on important political questions and counteract hostile propaganda against Lithuania and its history.
