The Spanish King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sophia made a State Visit to Lithuania over two days May 6 – 7, 2009. In Vilnius they were warmly welcomed by Lithuania’s President Valdas
Adamkus and Mrs. Alma Adamkus. President Adamkus had made a State Visit to Spain in 2005.

During their visit King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia met members of the government and parliament, visited Vilnius University and the European Humanities University, met university
students and staff and members of the Spanish community in Lithuania. They finished their visit in Trakai. Among the matters discussed by King Juan Carlos and President Adamkus was the
forthcoming presidency of the European Union by Spain in the first six months of 2010 and Lithuania’s presidency of the European Union, due to take place in 2013.
The visit by King Juan Carlos was the eighth visit to Lithuania by a reigning monarch. Last year Lithuania was honoured by the State Visit of Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands and by the
State Visit of Emperor Akihito of Japan in 2007.
