Lithuanian born Alex Chernov New Governor of Victoria

The newly appointed Governor of Victoria took up his appointment a week ago on April 8, 2011. He is Alex Chernov AO QC, born in Lithuania of Russian parents in 1938, who migrated to Australia after World War II with his parents in 1949. His early years in Australia were spent in the Bonegilla migrant camp.
Governor Chernov graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) from Melbourne University in 1961 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) (Honours) in 1968. During a distinguished career as a barrister he was elevated to Queens Council in 1980 and became a Supreme Court judge in 1997. He became an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2007 and Chancellor of Melbourne University in 2009.
