Edita Uksaitė – Nichols has become the first Lithuanian woman to climb to the top of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world (8,848 metres above sea level). She achieved this on May 22, 2013 and she did it by climbing via the much more challenging North Face. Of the 11

climbers in her party who set out for the top, only 4 of them succeeded in reaching it. On reaching the summit Edita proudly unfurled the Lithuanian flag, which carried the signatures of her fellow climbers with whom she been on climbing expeditions in Nepal and Tibet.
Back in Kathmandu after her climb, she was congratulated by Vladas Vitkauskas, who had been the first Lithuanian to conquer Mt Everest on May 10, 1993. Including Uksaitė and Vitkauskas, we now have 5 Lithuanians who have reached the top of Mt Everest. The others are Saulius Vilius (May 22, 2003), Aldas Baltutis (May 15, 2007) and Darius Vaičiulis (May 21, 2007).
