Lithuania Hosts Major International IT Forum: WITFOR-Vilnius 2003 |
The 2003 World Information Technology Forum, WITFOR-Vilnius 2003, will be held on
August 27-29, 2003 at the Vilnius Congress Hall in Vilnius, Lithuania. The Forum will be hosted by the Lithuanian Government and organised by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), under the auspices of UNESCO and with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a strategic partner. The list of sponsors includes such major international IT companies as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Oracle, Computer Associates and Cisco. The list of delegates already includes near 400 delegates from over 60 countries, including Australia. WITFOR 2003 will focus on the problems of ensuring "equitable use of ICT applications, access to quality contents and information in the public domain and intellectual property rights, and the development of 'fair use principles' in the Internet Age". At the end of its deliberations the Forum will formulate the Vilnius Declaration "advising governments on the best strategy for the use of ICT". It is fitting that among the many distinguished delegates there will be the Past President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus, who is now the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Construction of Knowledge Sciences.
