Queen Elizabeth II to Visit Lithuania in October 2006
Queen Elizabeth II meeting
President Valdas Adamkus and Mrs. Alma Adamkus
Queen Elizabeth II is due to make a state visit to Lithuania in October, 2006, during which she will address the Lithuanian Parliament. This was confirmed during the recent visit of Lithuania’s President Valdas Adamkus to Scotland on last July 4 - 5, where he and Mrs. Adamkus were received by Queen Elizabeth at Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace, a meeting which extended to more than twice the originally planned 20 minutes. The Queen was especially interested in Vilnius University and its influence in Lithuania’s scientific and cultural life. President Adamkus declared that Lithuanians are anxiously awaiting the Queen’s visit, the first ever visit by a British Monarch to Lithuania in all of Lithuania’s history.

While in Edinburgh, President Adamkus visited the Scottish Parliament and had talks with the First Minister of the Scottish Executive, Jack McConnell. President Adamkus also attended the opening of a photographic exhibition in Scottish Parliament by Lithuania’s most celebrated photographer Antanas Sutkus - "Daily Life Archives 1959 -1993". The exhibition will run 5-26 July 2006.
