World Leading Mathematicians Come to Vilnius International Conference
The late Prof. Vytautas
Statulevičius (1929 – 2003)
The 9th International Conference on Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics was held in Vilnius at the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, June 25 -30, 2006. It was attended by some 300 of the world’s leading mathematicians from 35 countries, including a number from Australia, among them Lithuanian heritage Prof. Paul Kabaila from La Trobe University in Melbourne. This series of Vilnius conferences, the first of which was held in 1973, were in no small measure instrumental in establishing the international reputation of Vilnius as a leading centre in probability theory. The Vilnius conferences have become the most prestigious and largest forum in probability theory in the world.

This 9th Conference has been dedicated to the memory Professor Vytautas Statulevičius, a world famous Lithuanian mathematician, who is justly regraded as of one of the founders and leader of the school of probability theory in Lithuania. He was the chief organiser of the previous eight conferences and sadly passed away in 2003, aged 73. Australians will remember Vytautas Statulevičius from the late 1960’s, when he visited Australian universities as a distinguished invited lecturer.
The Vilnius conferences have been held at four yearly intervals since 1973; three times already since Lithuania regained its independence (in 1993, 1998 and 2002). The 2006 Vilnius Conference was organised by the Lithuanian Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Vilnius University, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, the Lithuanian Mathematical Society and the Lithuanian Statistical Society.
