With the words "Lithuania will Never be Alone!" US President Obama reaffirmed America's and NATO's commitment to the defence of Lithuania and similarly to the defence of the other Eastern and Central European countries, formerly subjugated by the Soviet Union. These words were uttered during President Obama's visit to Poland June 3-4, 2014, for a meeting of Eastern and Central European leaders with President Obama and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Poland's first free democratic elections since the end of World War II on June 4, 1989.
During these meetings in Poland, which were overshadowed by Russia's aggression towards Ukraine, Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė met President Obama. He declared that the days of empires are over and announced a major 1 billion dollar package to strengthen the defences of Eastern and Central Europe and of aid to Ukraine. President Grybauskaitė was delighted to be able to assert that "United States is Lithuania's staunch ally that understands our security challenges and responds swiftly to emerging threats".
